谈到西画与国画的现状与发展时,杜新元认为西画是科学思维的产物,讲求光、色和焦点透视,追求效果逼真,形似。而中国画是以哲学思维为创作机枢,以写意为手段,通灵内涵,养眼更养心。科学越发展越精微,西画便越式微。照像术的出现,写实主义西画便走向末路,后来的印象派、抽象派,乃至现代主义、后现代主义,你方唱罢我登场,各自匆匆数十年以至于到了行为艺术,还是绘画吗?无怪乎西方艺术大师毕加索说:“真正的艺术在中国。”哲学思维带给中国艺术以无限广阔的空间,创新发展无止境。偏离这一思维,则只能是歧路、末路,近百年中国艺术之路,殷鉴不远。纯艺术是西方理念。艺术是文化则是中国所具备传统思维,所以中国有诗,有书,有画,有三绝,西方没有。继承发展是天道,而只有创新才能发展。中华五千年文化绵延,文明的不断绝,正赖于此。达到诗书画一绝,难。达到三绝,难乎其难,所以,中国历代当得三绝者寥寥。三绝合璧出自一人者,是独出,是创新。(名轩文/万承能摄)

It is difficult to achieve a unique skill in poetry, painting and calligraphy. It is difficult to achieve the three wonders.
